Birds as seed dispersers in deserts: suggestions from the ground-jays

چکیده

Abstract The study of seed dispersal, biotic and even less, the role birds in it, have been almost neglected deserts. Virtually absent from literature on dispersal are ground-jays, genus Podoces , four species crow family that inhabit arid environments, true deserts, Iran to Mongolia. Although they omnivorous, seem mainly depend seeds desert plants during cold season. There suggestions sparse may contribute similarly several corvid other climates, by caching useful microsites save them for later consumption thus actually favoring germination fail recover. Future research might benefit comparison with vast their better-known seed-caching relatives. This paper is aimed at providing basic information each ground-jay some investigating likely symbiosis plants, possible applications maintenance restoration vegetation a very extended zone.

The Importance of Birds as Browsers, Pollinators and Seed Dispersers in New Zealand Forests

New Zealand's forest plants evolved in the absence of mammalian herbivores, but subject to the attentions of a variety of other animals. Insects are and probably were, the primary folivores, but birds may also have been important. Several extinct birds, notably moas (Dinornithidae), were herbivores, and speculation continues about their impact on the vegetation. Among existing forest birds, bot...

Lizards as pollinators and seed dispersers: an island phenomenon

Although it is well established that many insects, birds and mammals serve as important pollinators and seed dispersers of flowering plants, the role of lizards in these processes has traditionally been considered as rare and less important. However, recent work shows both that their role as mutualistic agents has been underestimated and also reveals a striking pattern – that pollination and se...

Seed Dispersers, Seed Predators, and Browsers Act Synergistically as Biotic Filters in a Mosaic Landscape

In this study, we analize the functional influence of animals on the plants they interact with in a mediterranean mountain. We hypothesise that seed dispersers, seed predators, and browsers can act as biotic filters for plant communities. We analyse the combined effects of mutualistic (seed dispersal) and antagonistic (seed predation, herbivory) animal interactions in a mosaic landscape of Medi...

The Comparative Effectiveness of Rodents and Dung Beetles as Local Seed Dispersers in Mediterranean Oak Forests

The process of seed dispersal of many animal-dispersed plants is frequently mediated by a small set of biotic agents. However, the contribution that each of these dispersers makes to the overall recruitment may differ largely, with important ecological and management implications for the population viability and dynamics of the species implied in these interactions. In this paper, we compared t...

Asiatic Callosciurus squirrels as seed dispersers of exotic plants in the Pampas

Seed dispersal by exotic mammals exemplifies mutualistic interactions that can modify the habitat by facilitating the establishment of certain species. We examined the potential for endozoochoric dispersal of exotic plants by Callosciurus erythraeus introduced in the Pampas Region of Argentina. We identified and characterized entire and damaged seeds found in squirrel faeces and evaluated the g...
